⚙️Mechanical Monday

Last week we did the three stresses. This week: the three numbers that tell you how a material actually behaves when you load it sideways, twist it, or pull on it from both ends.

Term 1: Poisson's Ratio

Mechanical

When you stretch a bar, it gets thinner in the other two directions. Poisson's ratio is how much. Steel: 0.27 to 0.30. Aluminum: about 0.33. Rubber: nearly 0.5 — pull on it and the cross-section shrinks almost as fast as the length grows. Cork: about 0.0, which is why a wine cork pushes into the bottle instead of getting wider when you press it.

ν = −ε_lateral / ε_axial

Why it matters: Pressure vessel hoop stress calculations, thick-wall cylinder design, and seal-interface modeling all use Poisson's ratio. Pick the wrong number and your finite-element analysis is off by tens of percent without any error message to tell you.

Term 2: Shear Modulus

Mechanical

The ratio of shear stress to shear strain — the elastic stiffness against sideways loading instead of pull-apart loading. For most metals it's about 38 percent of Young's Modulus, and you can compute it directly if you know E and Poisson's ratio. Steel runs around 79 GPa; aluminum around 26.

G = τ / γ · G = E / [2(1 + ν)]

Why it matters: Every bolted joint, every press fit, every adhesive lap-shear test is a shear modulus problem in disguise. The fasteners-and-fits chapter of Shigley is shear modulus from page one to the end of the chapter.

Term 3: Torsion

Mechanical

The shear stress in a twisted shaft. Torque T, distance from the center r, polar moment of inertia J. For a solid round shaft J = πd⁴/32 — note the fourth-power dependence on diameter, which is why doubling the shaft size lets you carry sixteen times the torque at the same stress.

τ = T · r / J

Why it matters: Drive shafts, screw conveyors, mixer impeller shafts on the food-and-beverage side of Limestone County — anything that transmits rotational power lives and dies on a torsion calculation. Get the shaft diameter wrong and the failure mode is a clean 45-degree spiral break that's surprisingly hard to weld back together.

A mechanical engineer, a civil engineer, and a structural engineer walk into a bar. The mechanical one orders a beer, the civil one orders a beer, and the structural one specs the beer at 4× the design load and orders four.
